There are many places closed in Yellowstone during the winter season. Most places, if open, can only be reached by special vehicle. It takes many many trips out in the freezing cold to fully discover the best of Yellowstone in the winter. This is costly and also not easy. Subzero temps, equipment malfunctioning and challenging snow are only a few things to mention. Getting an image like this takes a lot of years of practice, research, and trial and error. I cannot begin to tell you how much goes into getting this right. I love this image and yet I would still go back to do it a bit different. Not the easiest of places to reach and also not the safest at times, all weather permitting. You could go here a bunch of times and never get on this trail. This one is a very rare one because trail is almost always closed in the winter. One step off the trail and you could quickly be down chest high in snow. Each step you have to pack your feet down before you take another step. Its a slow grind with a very limited space to set up and work. Photo © copyright by Laurie R. Martin.
