This Way Out

Yellowstone National Park

Not much grows here in the thermal pools except a scientists dream. A few old dead trees stand but no telling how old they are. By capillary action the trees soaked up mineral laden water, which colors their base and prolongs their decay. The colors on the terraces are a blend of minerals and detached limestone that occurred when water passed up to the surface from lower hot springs below. Once the water hits the open air it looses some of the carbon dioxide and becomes a travertine mineral creating the colorful built up terraces seen in Mammoth. I often wonder what this is going to look like in another 10-50 years from now. Photo © copyright by Laurie R. Martin.
